Skin is made up of seven different layers and is the largest organ in the body. It is also one of the most important portals for entry and exit of substances into the body. Once we understand this concept we need to realize that every single thing that we come into contact with to a greater or lesser degree is being absorbed by the skin directly into our body. Many commercially produced skin and hair care products contain petrol-chemicals, artificial colors and preservatives, and in many cases urine extracts. So the next time you rub something on your body ask yourself this question, “would I eat this?” and if the answer is no, then understand that in an indirect way you are actually eating what you are putting on your skin.
As a simple guideline to reading skin care labels, if it has a number associated with it, the ingredient is poly-syllabic and/or you cannot hope to pronounce it, it is probably not safe to put on your skin.
It is the authors personal opinion, which is actually shared by many leading health care experts, that the increased incidents of skin cancer particularly in the so-called developed countries is in large part due to the increased use of highly chemically toxic sun screens. In countries and areas of the world that commercially produced sun screens are unavailable to the general populations, their incidences of skin cancer are almost non-existent.
In my opinion when it comes to skin care, organic or as close to organic as possible, has got to be the preferred choice. There are many companies on the market that are producing relatively inexpensive high quality organic cosmetics. Be careful with misleading labels when dealing with organic products. Legal guidelines are not particularly clear and a product can state in very large print on its cover that it is organic; however, once the full ingredient list is read you will find that only one to two ingredients are in fact organic or natural and that the rest are chemicals. So be sure to read the labels carefully.
My favourite range hands down, comes from a company called Miessence and is not available in retail stores.

As a short easy guideline to remember anywhere, if you don’t want to eat it and you can’t pronounce it don’t put it on your face or your skin.
